How it works

Children learn about tadpoles through song or rhyme

What to do in the class

Introduce the song explain that we are going to learn about tadpoles, you can either use the spoken or sung version. Perhaps in the first week use the spoken rhyme and the second week use the song and pictures.

If using the rhyme gather the children around and seat them so that they can listen to the rhyme and see the pictures. If you are singing the song together, use the choreographed moves below to the music.

 I’m A Little Tadpole

I’m a little tadpole, small and black

Little round body and a tail at the back

I’m in my egg now, safe and sound

But when I hatch I’ll swim around

I’m a little tadpole, small and black

Little round body and a tail at the back

Now I’m out and growing bigger each day

Dreaming of the frog I’ll be some day!

I’m a little tadpole, small and black

Little round body and a tail at the back

I’m growing legs so now I can kick

With these legs I am very quick

I’m a little tadpole, small and black

Little round body and a tail at the back

I’ve now got arms and my tail’s got small

As well as swim, now I can crawl

I was a little tadpole, small and black

Little round body and a tail at the back

But now I’ve changed, my tail has gone

And I’m a frog all big and strong!

Tips

Before you laminate the pictures, write on the back of each one the relevant line of the rhyme. That way, when you show your class the picture, you will be able to see the words!
