Babies Walkers 2 2s to 3s 3s to 4s

Overview and benefit

Children sing a song about a different aspect of the seaside. They explore what they might see or do at the seaside in the song through props or pictures to learn more about them. Songs are easy to remember for children and a good introduction to learning more about a topic.

Equipment required

  • Chosen song
  • Props if required

Duration

  • Up to six weeks

How it works

This activity is about singing a song or two about some aspect of the seaside. Whichever song is chosen, try to bring the song to life more by introducing it and explaining what it is going to be about. Perhaps draw out of your discover box toy versions of what you are going to sing about (e.g. a bath toy boat, a toy fish, a bucket and spade etc). At the end you could talk about the props, asking who has been to the seaside or who has been on a boat, or what are good things to take to the seaside.

What to do in the class

Choose one or 2 songs to sing. Talk to the children first about whether they have been to the seaside and what you usually find there. Explain what song you are going to sing and what it is about.

Five Little Sea Creatures (use props or pictures)

Five little sea creatures

On the ocean floor;

The lobster walked away

Now there are four.

Four little sea creatures

Living in the sea;

The octopus crept away

Now there are three.

Three little sea creatures

Wondering what to do;

“Good-bye,” said the starfish

Now there are two.

Two little sea creatures

Not having much fun;

Off swam the sea horse

Now there is one.

One little hermit crab

Sad and all alone,

Back came the starfish,

Back came the sea horse,

Back came the octopus,

Back came the lobster,

Then all five went home

5 Little Fish (Sung to the tune of 5 Little Monkeys Teasing my Crocodile)

5 little fish swimming in the sea

Teasin’ Mr. Shark

You can’t catch me, You can’t catch me!

Along came the Mr. Shark as quiet as can be

Snap! One little fish is now his tea.

4 little … etc.

One little fish swimming in the seaTeasin’ Mr. Shark

You can’t catch me, You can’t catch me!

Along came the Mr. Shark as quiet as can be

Snap! One little fish is now his tea

Now Mr. Shark is lonely! Can’t you see?
