Overview and benefit
Learning social skills is an important part of every child’s and adults world. This activity encourages the children to accomplish a task by working together, taking turns and sharing resources.
- Bean bags or alternative props to pass around
One to two weeks
How it works
This activity is a simple game of pass the beanbag. It helps the children to learn to cooperate and share resources.
What to do in the class
Seat the children in a circle, pass out several different coloured bean bags. Explain that we are going to play pass the beanbag so when the music is on they must pass the bag to the person next to them. They are only allowed to hold one bean bag at a time, so if someone next to them already has a bean bag they must wait until this is passed on. When the music stops, call out a colour and whoever is holding that colour must get up and run all the way around the circle and back into their place (taking the parent if necessary!).
Adaptations for older/younger children
Smaller children will need some help to run around the circle.
What to do in a nursery setting
The class leader may well have to run around the circle with the child the first few times until they get the idea.
