Music is at the heart of MAD Academy and infuses all our classes. This is because engaging in music is so natural and joyful for young children. It can also have powerful benefits and helps children learn so many different skills.
However this Learning Element focuses on teaching young children basic musical skills. Research shows that the earlier children learn musical skills the better. Many children don’t start to learn music until they learn an instrument which is rarely before the age of 7 or 8. Others only experience music teaching at school. But music can be taught at a much earlier age and it can be more effective when done young. For example studies suggest that learning to tune into pitch and develop good pitch awareness is easier if it is encouraged earlier. Similarly learning to hear and keep a beat can be taught when young and is easier to learn.
These early skills gives children a good start if they continue to learn music as they grow up. However, even if they don’t musicality has huge benefits in other areas of development such as speech, numeracy, reading, and writing. Even physical development is enhanced through learning to keep a beat
For more detail on the way we support the development of musicality within our classes, please see the background to each of the Musicality activities given on their description pages.
