Overview and benefit
Once again, Ralph comes out to help you sing the “Goodbye Song”. The purpose of this song is to say goodbye to everyone and give individual praise to each child. The song is a consistent signal to the children that the class is about to end this acts as a signpost for the children. Signposting children’s and babies days with songs is an excellent way for children to begin to understand the structure of their days and what to anticipate.
- MAD Academy stickers
The Goodbye Song must end every MAD Academy class, party or event
How it works
Children sit in a circle and the instructor sits at the front with Ralph singing the goodbye song with the class and doing the actions.
What to do in the class
Sit down in a circle with the children in front of the adults, on their lap. The movements we use can be done either with Ralph or be exaggerated by you.
When the song has finished the children then come to you and Ralph and are encouraged to remove their name stickers and give them to you in return for a MAD Academy sticker. Try to give feedback as you hand out the stickers, such as ‘that was great dancing this week…’ or ‘ really good rhythms this week…’ Whilst the children receive their MAD Academy sticker, Ralph is open for cuddles and hand shakes. This discourages the children from physical contact with you.

* Babies:- Encourage adult to hold/walk child to you during the song. Give each child a MAD Academy sticker.
* Walkers Onwards:- The children, once comfortable in the setting can come and sit in front of you. They can then say “goodbye” to Ralph and give him a hug if they wish and collect their MAD Academy sticker.
Adaptations for babies
This is a great time for babies to learn to wave back to you. They learn to wave goodbye quite quickly as the song is repeated each week. When you offer the stickers ask the carer whether they would prefer to wear it, or the baby. Avoid pushing Ralph at the baby for a kiss, a high five is much more hygienic with multiple babies.
