|Babies||Walkers to 2||2s to 3s||3s to 4s|
Overview and benefit
This creates tactile pathways on the floor for crawling babies to investigate with their whole bodies.
- Range of textured surfaces, e.g:
- furry throw
- soft blankets
- a large survival blanket
- crinkly paper
- silky fabric
- clean towels
- sheets of bubble wrap
- hessian sacking
- camping groundsheet
- a clean rubber bathmat
- carpet or rug
- some back ground music
One to two weeks
How it works
Combine different textures on the floor for the babies to crawl and lie on. Fur Throws/blankets, bubble wrap sheets, crinkly metallic paper ( a large survival blanket is good), a rough fabric for example hessian sacking, a silky fabric (satin or nylon), towels.
What to do in the class
Mums can either lay the babies on each texture or the babies can crawl around and explore themselves.
Extend if you have crawlers to make feely mountains – pile up cushions and large beanbags with different textures over the top so they can crawl up and over them
Adaptations for older/younger children
Not suitable for walking children as they may slip on the surfaces.
What to do in a nursery setting
Encourage the staff to work with the babies on a one to one basis.
